‘The DUFF’ handler om den unge pige Bianca, der ved et tilfælde opdager, at hun bliver omtalt som D.U.F.F., der står for Designated Ugly Fat Friend.
Bianca beslutter, at hakkeordenen må ændres og på trods af advarsler fra hendes yndlingslærer, hverver hun den populære, men sleske dreng Wesley til at hjælpe hende med at genopfinde sig selv. Sidst, men ikke mindst, må hun også finde selvtilliden til at gå imod skolens hensynsløse sladderdronning Madison.
Historien om Bianca er baseret på bogen af samme navn af Kody Keplinger. Konceptet bag bogen, med inddeling af teenagere i forskellige ’arketyper’ som atleterne, taberne og de populære, er allerede set i utallige komedier. Sjældent har hovedrollen dog været de populære pigers lidt usynlige veninde.
I hovedrollen som Bianca Piper ses Mae Whitman, som tidligere har spillet high school-elev i filmen The Perks Of Being A Wallflower.
