Dramaet ‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ foregår i 1800-tallets England og følger den unge Bathsheba Everdene, der flytter til en ny landsby efter at have arvet sin onkels gård.

Bathsheba er en handlekraftig og selvstændig kvinde, der ikke er bange for selv at drive gården og styre landbruget. Modspillet til tidens kønsroller skaber en del opmærksomhed omkring den smukke landejer, og snart er hun splittet mellem tre vidt forskellige bejlere – den jordnære fåreavler Gabriel, den charmerende sergent Frank og sidst den ældre samt velhavende William Boldwood.

‘Far from the Madding Crowd’ er baseret på Thomas Hardys klassiske roman fra 1874 og er foruden at være forfatterens første litterære succes også kendt som Hardys klareste hyldest til den landlige idyl. Danske Thomas Vinterberg har instrueret den britiske periodefilm med Carey Mulligan i hovedrollen.
