Filmen har en gennemgående gribende og til tider også dramatisk stemning. Den indeholder flere scener fra et felthospital under 1. en kun at kunne virke skræmmende på børn under 7 år.
Verdenskrig, hvor man ser hårdt sårede og lemlæstede soldater, der kæmper for deres liv. Disse scener er til tider voldsomt blodige. I flere scener ser man ligeledes lig og mennesker med manglende lemmer. I en scene ser man en kvinde, der leder efter en mand blandt en masse døde og sårede mænd, der alle har været udsat for sennepsgas. I en anden ser man en kvinde, der forsøger at redde en mands liv. Manden bløder voldsomt fra halsen. I flere andre scener ser man en kvinde, der får overbragt nyheden om nærtståendes død. Det vurderes på baggrund af filmens knugende og tiltagende desperate stemning og på baggrund af de blodige og voldsomme scener, at filmen vil kunne virke angstfremkaldende på de yngste i aldersgruppen 11-15. Filmen får derfor en 15-års-grænse.

‘Testament of Youth’ starter i foråret 1914, hvor Vera Brittain ikke vil lade sig kue af samfundsnormer og sine konservative forældres ønsker. Derfor søger hun ind på det prestigefyldte Oxford University.
Hun har en drøm om at blive forfatter, hvilket hun deler med sin brors karismatiske ven, Roland Leighton, som Vera yderligere forelsker sig i. Da England erklærer Tyskland krig, ser både romancen og deres fremtidsplaner sorte ud, og samtidig sendes Roland og broren til fronten.
Den handlekraftige kvinde har dog ikke i sinde at blive hjemme under krigen og melder sig som frivillig sygeplejerske for at hjælpe de unge ofre.
‘Testament of Youth’ er baseret på Vera Brittains erindringer fra Første Verdenskrig, der blev et vidnesbyrd om den tabte generation, som mistede deres liv på slagmarken. Fortællingen rummer også en historie om kvindefrigørelse, overgangen fra barn til voksen og det første møde med seksualiteten.
Svenske Alicia Vikander har helt droppet accenten i rollen som Brittain. Hun blev kendt for at spille Caroline Mathilde i En kongelig affære, men har siden fået internationale roller i film som Anna Karenina og Seventh Son.
Kit Harington, som hun også spiller over for i sidstnævnte, er kendt fra ‘Game of Thrones’ og Pompeji. Han har rollen som Roland Leighton.
